Are you interested in small community living?

A group of people that lives together, cares for each other and looks after our environment?

More than just flatmates... more than just recycling...

Have a look at my thoughts, what I'm doing and what else I'd love to do.

I'm curious to know your own thoughts, actions and dreams. Send me a message below and we can start a conversation.

MESSAGE ME

Hi, my name's Allan and I'd love to share some of my thoughts about community living. I lived in an eco-village community for several months and that experience has helped shape my ideas. If anything here 'gels' with you then send me a message. I'd love to hear your thoughts.

Housing
I love the practice of share housing. I've previously lived on my own in a small bedsit but prefer the daily interaction of people sharing space under the same roof. Many eco-villages have separate dwellings that you can buy as your own space and that affords some privacy. In share housing you might have a private bedroom but share the lounge, dining, bathroom and outdoor spaces. This is generally more sustainable and usually less expensive for the residents. I would love to be a co-steward of a property for multiple residents, owned in a trust and financed through resident contributions (rent/board). Loans could initially be made to the trust to provide funds to purchase a property.

Self Sufficiency
I like the idea of being able to fend for myself, grow my own food and be less reliant on a consumer driven society. However there is more community than in just our own little residence and to be somewhat dependent on our larger community is good for fostering wider friendships. Supporting community gardens and local growers can assit those in the community without the means to grow their own food. In many places now there are seed swaps that also include fruit and veges and household goods. These are an excellent way of sharing our excesses and needs with others.

Food and diet
I've mostly followed a vegan lifestyle over the past 20 years which includes a plant based diet. It's generally considered the most environmentally friendly diet when not dependent on packaged and processed foods but focused on fresh, local and organic. As I love sharing meals I think I would be more comfortable in a community that stipulated plant based foods only and, again, leaning mostly towards fresh, local and organic.

Living together
Most of the residents will naturally be drawn together with common principles like caring for the environment, social justice, minimalistic living, sustainabilty and waste reduction. These principles will drive how we live and a lot of the decisions made.

Decision making
I think consensus is important when making decisions. Every resident needs to know that their thoughts matter. As I expect we would meet daily for meals some lighter issues can be dealt with then and if there appears to be some disagreement or need for deeper discussion then a meeting could be scheduled.

Religion/Spirituality
I don't adhere to any particular religious belief or sense of something beyond physical and emotional experience. I respect that beliefs, experiences and manifestations of spirituality vary widely. While I strongly support common faith principles (like love, joy, peace, patience, kindness etc), generally I would not choose to live in a group that is overtly spiritual in their outlook.
